September 2011: Hidden dangers in 'fun foods'

Teletubby baked beans, Sesame Street yoghurts, Big Ears chicken nuggets and Bob The Builder pasta are just some of the foods designed to catch the eye of both parent and child.

But a recent survey of more than 400 products warns that many are so nutritionally poor, they should carry a health warning. The survey, by children's food manufacturers Organix, found one third of the foods analysed contained colourings (including dyes banned by other countries), 75 per cent had flavourings such as monosodium glutamate (linked with intolerance in children and hyperactivity), more than one in four contained preservatives, and an overwhelming majority had up to three times more fat, salt and sugar than recommended for adults.
